A Dystopian Love Affair

With the holiday break quickly approaching, take some time to explore new authors!

Kristen Simmons is an upcoming young-adult author. Her first publications, Article 5 and Breaking Point are part of a trilogy; with the third installment, Three, due to be released in early February, 2014.

New York, Los Angeles, and Washington, DC have been abandoned.

The Bill of Rights has been revoked, and replaced with the Moral Statutes.

There are no more police—instead, there are soldiers. There are no more fines for bad behavior—instead, there are arrests, trials and maybe worse. People who get arrested don’t usually come back.

Seventeen-year-old Ember Miller is old enough to remember that things weren’t always this way. Living with her rebellious single mother, it’s hard to forget that people weren’t always arrested for reading the wrong books or staying out after dark. That life in the United States used to be different.

In the three years since the war ended, Ember has perfected the art of keeping a low profile. She knows how to get the things she needs—like food stamps and hand-me-down clothes—and how to pass the random home inspections by the Federal Bureau of Reformation. Her life is as close to peaceful as circumstances allow. That is, until her mother is arrested for noncompliance with Article 5 of the Moral Statutes. And what’s worse, one of the arresting officers is none other than Chase Jennings…the only boy Ember has ever loved.

ARE YOU COMPLIANT?

Although this is her first series of publications, Kristen’s love affair with creative writing began as early as elementary school. In regard to her work, “I love the way [stories] can transport you to a different reality, make you see the world through different eyes, challenge your beliefs and make you dream.” She began writing full-length books for submission as an undergraduate and got her break in 2010 with Tor Teen, a division of MacMillan Publishers. Living in Florida, she balances her writing career with a young family, an ever growing book tour, and is a jazzercise instructor to boot!

The complete trilogy has not been released, however Kristen is already under contract for another publication, a pair of books set in the young-adult classification. Her fresh approach to a genre bursting with new authors, Kristen’s novels grip you from cover to cover. We expect to see great things from this author and eagerly await her next release!

Kristen will be at the Northern Virginia Teen Book Festival March 7-8, 2015. Read more about Kristen Simmons at www.kristensimmonsbooks.com
